The Orkney Isles are an archipelago off the north coast of Scotland, comprising nearly 70 islands of which about 20 are inhabited. The landscape is predominantly low-lying and windswept, with moorland, coastal cliffs and sandy bays. The islands have a long history of settlement, from prehistoric times through Norse rule to the present day, and this heritage is visible across the islands in archaeology, place names and local culture.

Skara Brae Prehistoric Village is a Neolithic settlement on the Mainland, with stone houses and artefacts dating back around 5,000 years. The Scapa Flow Visitor Centre and Museum documents the natural and military history of the waters between the islands, including the scuttling of the German fleet in the First World War. Kirbuster Museum preserves a traditional Orkney farmhouse with its layout and furnishings intact. The Pier Arts Centre on Stromness showcases contemporary visual art. For activity-based visits, Orkan Adventures offers water-based experiences around the islands.
