Chilsham Farm Nurseries - The Shepherd’s Hut at Calvesfield Shaw

Herstmonceux sits on the edge of the Wealden countryside, close enough to the Elizabethan castle and its gardens for a day out, yet far enough that Chilsham Farm Nurseries feels genuinely removed. The Shepherd's Hut at Calvesfield Shaw occupies its own corner of a working farm where sheep, geese, ducks and chickens roam across the grounds. A fenced pond lies 30 yards away; guests can explore the wider acreage but should be aware this is an active agricultural setting.
The hut itself is a single open-plan space on ground level, with a double bed in one section, a kitchen equipped for proper cooking (oven, hob, dishwasher), a shower room, and a living area centred on a woodburner and a 32-inch television. Bed linen, towels, Wi-Fi and heating are provided. The arrangement works well for two people, with a patio and garden furniture outside; one well-behaved dog can stay free provided it stays on a lead. There is no smoking inside. A hardcore drive allows you to drop off luggage at the door, with stepping stones leading to the entrance itself.
The hut is fully insulated and stays warm through the colder months, making it comfortable year-round. It suits couples seeking quietness or a couple with a dog, though the farm's pond and working status mean it is not suitable for babies or toddlers. The nearest town offers the Observatory Science Centre and other attractions within reach by car.
