Rolling countryside surrounds this converted farm building near Penrith, part of a small cluster of holiday cottages arranged around a cobbled courtyard. The Eden Valley location puts you within reach of nearby villages on foot, and walking routes begin at the gate. The main gardens are shared with other guests, while your own patio and garden space remain private.
Howscales has an unconventional layout that prioritises views: two bedrooms and a bathroom occupy the ground floor, while the upper level opens into a single living area with exposed beams, a wood-burning stove, and a kitchen equipped for cooking proper meals. A Smart TV, comfortable seating and dining space make it workable for a small family or friends travelling together. The essentials—electricity, heating, wi-fi, bed linen and towels—are included, and you can make use of shared facilities including a laundry room and communal freezer. One dog is welcome, which works well given the countryside setting and immediate access to the footpaths. The property is non-smoking throughout.

My wife & I plus Juno the dog stayed in Hazelrigg Cottage for a week in June. The cottage is 5 star accommodation, very clean and comfortable with lovely little touches throughout by Liz. The newly fitted spacious shower/toilet room is an added bonus with a great shower. There is a small enclosed garden off the patio doors and a huge enclosed grass area for the dog off that, which Juno loved. Absolutely beautiful property in a great setting. Liz the owner is also very friendly and approachable and even left some delicious homemade cake for us and homemade biscuits for Juno. Fantastic 🙌

We just spent a lovely three nights at Howscales as a base for our fishing trip. The house is well equipped and comfortable. The delicious cake on arrival was much appreciated!

We had an absolutely wonderful time at Howscales Cottage and can't wait to return. The location is stunning, with beautiful views over the surrounding countryside. It was peaceful and quiet. Also convenient for visiting both the Lake District and the North Pennines. The cottage itself was impeccable, with thoughtful details throughout. We felt at home. We went with our dog, who was welcomed and had self-contained gardens to explore. Thank you so much, Liz and Adrian - we will undoubtedly be back!
