About The Waterford Arms

Seafood is the main draw at The Waterford Arms, a pub restaurant and B&B on Collywell Bay Road in Whitley Bay. The kitchen turns out generous plates of fish and chips alongside its well-known Waterford Whale platter, served in a bar that locals and visitors alike treat as a proper night-out destination rather than an afterthought to the rooms upstairs. Portions are large and prices reasonable, though the odd meal can miss the mark on consistency.

There are seven rooms in total, kept simple and comfortable, with breakfast included and free WiFi throughout. A lift makes access straightforward, and the property extends well beyond bed and bar: guests can use an indoor swimming pool, gym and spa or sauna, while a garden offers a quieter spot to sit outside. The place also doubles as a wedding venue and has meeting rooms available for those combining a stay with work.

Staff are consistently described as friendly and helpful, and dogs are welcome, making it an easy base for those travelling with pets. Free on-site parking is provided, useful for exploring the wider Whitley Bay coastline beyond the pub's own considerable draw.

Amazing food in a relaxed environment. Very family friendly and the food was 5 star for all of us, young and old. The building is a traditional pub set up, so nice character but a little wear & tear. Service got a little slow after our mains when a bigger group came in but we can see the staff were trying hard & were super friendly when we approached the bar to place our dessert & drinks order there instead. They realised when bringing the desserts that they'd not cleaned away the mains and were prompt in then doing so. Definitely worth booking and be prepared for it being a relaxed service. No complaints, just a super popular place with really good food so lots going on.

What an incredible discovery! During my visit to Blythe, we stumbled upon this amazing pub completely by chance. We arrived around 7pm, and although it was bustling with activity and no tables were initially available, we kindly asked to use the bathrooms as we had a long drive home. The friendly lady behind the bar was so kind, she managed to squeeze us in for a table. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful or welcoming. There were three of us, and we decided to try the Friday fish deal for two — a generous serving of thick, white fish with crispy chips and mushy peas, all served with a large pot of tea each. The fish was huge and perfectly cooked. My husband went for the cheeseburger, which looked delicious — though the chef forgot the extra patty! Still, it was a hearty, not so well-done burger that he enjoyed it. Sadly, we didn’t get any photos as we were too hungry and quickly dug in — an unforgettable experience that I highly recommend!

Was terribly disappointed at the service by a staff at the The Waterford Arms over the weekend. We waited so long for someone to hand out the menu. Food came fairly quickly. Once food was done, the table next to us got a dessert menu immediately. We were not given a dessert menu. I had to ask for one. One of my family members asked if the roast beef for lunch was going to be hard or soft and an attendant said it was going to be fall of the bone type but beef roast turned out so chewy. She barely ate the beef. We complained about it and the attendant said oh ok and walked away. Did not bother offerring another option or anything. Utterly disappointing service. Waited so long for bad dessert. Apple crumble was like a cake. Nothing like a crumble. Disapppointing. Cheese cake was like a cheese mousse. Honestly, the service made it all worse. I wish we could be treated with more respect.

Been looking forward to going to have the seafood platter for a long time after all the good reviews. However, was very disappointing. Although the tray initially looked appetising, there was no squid as advertised, and a meagre portion of chips were found under the lobster (which had been pre ordered and paid an additional £20), we had to ask for the bread to go with the dressed crab. The crab was lovely, as were the mussels, although a few were unopened. The battered fish was soggy, and my husband said his battered fish was 'soaking wet'. The lobster - only meat that we were able to eat was the small tail, definitely not worth the extra £20. The claw meat was raw and jelly like in consistency. The prawns were plump and juicy. Overall, a very disappointing experience 😕

People say this pub offers excellent, generously portioned food, especially the fish and chips and seafood options, with many highlighting the "Waterford Whale." They also mention the friendly and helpful staff, reasonable prices, and dog-friendly atmosphere.

Some reviews mention the food can be inconsistent.
