About Mackays Hotel

Union Street runs through the heart of Wick, and Mackays Hotel occupies a spot on it that puts the town's harbour, shops and the wider Caithness coastline all within easy reach. The Castle of Old Wick, a ruin perched above the sea, lies a short distance away for those who fancy a walk along the cliffs.

Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms, free Wi-Fi and drinks provided, and a lift serves the upper floors. Some rooms show their age rather than feeling freshly refurbished, but they're kept clean and comfortable. The hotel also has a bridal suite and hosts weddings, alongside meeting rooms for business visitors. Dogs are welcome, and packed lunches or room service can be arranged for those out exploring during the day.

The restaurant is the standout feature, with dishes such as lamb and sticky toffee pudding drawing particular praise, and breakfast, a bar and kids' meals are all available on site. Staff are attentive and the overall value is good. Free on-site parking and an electric vehicle charge point are provided, and golf and fishing are both within reach nearby, along with further pubs and restaurants in town.

I had the most unforgettable lunch at this hotel truly a 10/10 experience in every way. From the first spoonful of their incredible soup which I can confidently say is the best I’ve ever had every single dish that followed everything was flawless. The flavours were rich and perfectly balanced. The presentation was elegant and the service made the meal feel special from start to finish. I left feeling completely delighted. This was hands down the best lunch of my life.

I stayed in room 9, direct at the roundabout. So nowadays in full sight of all the traffic. Room is big. Bathroom floor is not even, like time has slowly made the floor sinking. Interieur inside (hal, staircase, tapestry on the floor) is outdated, like sounds from times when the hotel was ok. Time is nearing for an inside upgrade. Breakfast ok, not so many choices. Pluspoint: fresh fruits, vyoghurt. Staff friendly and helpful. Food in restaurant is ok, although the carpaccio starter is only two small slices of meat

We had a lovely 3 night stay here as part of our NC500 trip with our little Jack Russell terrier. It's slightly deceptive when you arrive as externally the hotel looks a little run down but don't let put you off. Our room was spotlessly clean and nice and large with a view out over the river. Just opposite is a lovely walk down along the river bank which was perfect for the dog first thing in the morning. We had cooked breakfast every day which was lovely. The real highlight was the staff though who were so friendly and helpful, they made our stay a real joy, thank you.

Recently spent a weekend here. The room, although smaller than we're used to, was very nice. Everything you need in it. The wifi was pretty good as well - I had no issues. Breakfast was lovely on each occasion we had it. We had a meal there one night and that was equally as good. Wick itself looks like its undergoing some major roadworks in the town centre and, at the moment, pretty much everywhere is shut or in the process of closing down. Hopefully that will change soon. Lovely hotel, but I'd give it a year or so before I'd go back.
