About New Holgate
New Holgate occupies a townhouse property on Holgate Road, with just 12 rooms giving it the feel of a small, personally-run hotel rather than a big chain operation. Rooms are comfortable, clean and generously sized, and some guests find themselves given a free upgrade on arrival - a nice touch that adds to the sense of being looked after.
Breakfast is a genuine highlight, with hot dishes cooked to order and fresh milk provided in rooms, and the restaurant and bar downstairs give guests somewhere to eat and drink without leaving the building. There's also a garden with outdoor seating, room service, drinks in room, and family rooms for those travelling with children, plus kids' meals on the menu. Staff are consistently described as friendly and helpful, running a 24 hour reception and offering concierge services alongside meeting rooms for those combining business with a stay.
The property is around 0.66 miles from York, putting York Castle Museum and the rest of the city within easy reach. On-site parking is available for a charge, and there's an electric vehicle charging point, free WiFi, luggage storage, and pets are welcome throughout.

Lovely hotel 10 minutes from York Station. Check in was quick and staff extremely helpful. Room was a good size with all the required facilities. Breakfast was included in our rate and very good. The hot portion was cooked to order and the poached egg was one of the best I’ve had. Although we didn’t use it, during the day you could access extra tea and coffee for the room along with snacks and juices. Another nice touch was that they provided filtered (I think it was) water in a bottle with fresh milk in a flask for the room on arrival. I would definitely stay here again

“Dreadful Experience !”, extremely unhelpful, inexperienced staff. We arrived for a two night stay at the New Holgate, during the first day of the UK heatwave. We went to our room after check in, but found it very warm, I tried to open the window, but it is restricted to 3 inches of opening. There is no aircon. My wife then went to reception to request a “Fan”, but the member of staff said there were no fans, and the owner won’t buy any. He then gave her an “electric convector heater”. We tried this the first night, but it was noisy and ineffective. The following morning after a hot , bad night's sleep, I went to reception and asked again for a Fan, as we had a bad night's sleep. They said there were none, I requested to speak to the owner, but was told he does not speak to customers. I suggested they should buy a £20 fan, as it would be impossible to sleep that second night, and that day was forecast to reach 30 degrees. They said no, and asked us to leave the hotel. We could not believe the attitude of the staff/owner. We then found a lovely hotel close by, for the second night., and guess what, the first thing they offered us was a “Fan”. The whole experience at the “New Holgate” put a dampener on our break in York.

A beautiful gem of a hotel. Lovely room with ensuite facilities and seating area. So much nicer than a chain. Staff were friendly and welcoming - happy to help and accommodating. Breakfast was a delight- would highly recommend the Yorkshire Breakfast.

We had a horrible experience at this hotel. Don’t get me wrong—the staff were very nice and accommodating. The problem was the room itself. We stayed in Room 9, and it was unbearably warm. I asked at reception if they had a fan, and they provided what seemed to be an air blower, but it didn’t help at all because the airflow was very weak. The room was so hot that I spent the entire night sweating and woke up with a damp pillow and bedsheets. Secondly, there was no proper way to keep the window open. The only solution was to use a doorstop, which I ended up doing because the room was so hot. Unfortunately, this meant we could hear traffic noise from outside, which kept us awake late into the night. Thirdly, the floor was dirty and appeared not to have been vacuumed. Finally—and most frustrating of all—was the shower. The water pressure was extremely weak, more like a drizzle than a shower. There seemed to be only one temperature setting: hot. The bath was no better, with only two options—too cold or too hot—and the water pressure was equally poor. By far, this is the worst hotel I have stayed in. We chose this hotel for a post-birthday celebration in York, and it was a very disappointing experience. That said, I would like to thank the staff for their kindness and helpfulness throughout our stay. I particularly appreciated being allowed to leave our luggage after checking out at 11:00 a.m. and collect it later in the afternoon before our 5:00 p.m. train. I was also grateful to one member of staff who kindly offered to lend me a charger after discovering that the wall adapter I had brought with me was broken. Unfortunately, her charger used a USB-A connection while my cable required USB-C, so I was unable to use it, but I genuinely appreciated the gesture and willingness to help. Unfortunately, despite the excellent customer service from the staff, the condition and comfort of the room fell far below expectations, and I would not stay here again or recommend it to others.
