An adults-only pub-hotel on Boroughbridge Road, York, suited to travellers who want a hearty carvery and easy parking over polished rooms.

About The Red Lion

The Red Lion suits travellers after a relaxed, no-fuss base in York rather than a boutique stay, and its adults-only setup makes it a good fit for couples or friends visiting together. Set on Boroughbridge Road with parking on site, it's a straightforward option for anyone driving into the city rather than arriving by train.

The hotel has 15 rooms, each en suite, with room service and drinks available to order in. The bar and restaurant are the real draw, with a carvery known for its generous choice of meats and vegetables, plus breakfasts that guests find substantial. Free WiFi and a garden round out the facilities, and the atmosphere throughout is described as warm and welcoming, helped along by friendly staff. It's worth noting that some guests have found the rooms themselves a little tired, so this is a place better suited to those prioritising food and hospitality over polished decor.

York Minster and the National Railway Museum are both within reach, and there's a pub and other places to eat nearby, along with cycling routes and fishing spots for those wanting to get outdoors during their stay.

Stayed overnight for a local wedding. Bed was comfy, shower clean and good pressure, room clean. Good darkness at night. A light bit of road noise but only with window open. Toiletries and room facilities fairly basic but very clean and towels and sheets super clean. Service really friendly and accommodating. Breakfast choices varied and the full English was good with black pudding, hash browns, mushrooms too. Good value for money.

Booked carvery Sunday lunch. Plenty of choice and value for money. Staff friendly and helpful when we were seated next to a hot radiator in the hot weather we managed to get a move to the bar area which was much cooler.

We went here for the Sunday carvery and everything was amazing from start to finish. The staff were so friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. Our son had an accident with a slush and one of the staff helped clean him up, offered to dry out his clothes and replaced his slush for free which was lovely. Would definitely recommend!
