Station House Cottages - The Carriage House
York

Upper Poppleton sits quietly on York's edge, a village with its own shops, pubs and local character while remaining within easy reach of the medieval city. The Carriage House is a sympathetically extended Victorian property that has been furnished throughout to a high standard, offering the kind of comfort you'd expect from a luxury holiday let. The setting is peaceful—the sort of place where you can actually relax—yet the village has everything you need on the doorstep.
Inside, the ground floor centres on a generous open-plan living space with vaulted ceilings and bi-folding doors opening to a small enclosed garden with patio seating. The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking proper meals. One bedroom on this floor is a zip-and-link bed with an ensuite shower; the other upstairs is a kingsize, with a bathroom featuring both bath and shower. Bed linen, towels, Wi-Fi and heating are all provided. There's parking for one car in front, with additional on-street spaces nearby, and a dedicated bike store if you're planning to cycle into York.
The property suits couples or small families looking for a base that feels like home rather than a hotel room. No smoking is permitted inside.

We were delighted with our break at Station House Cottages. The accommodation was perfect for my wife and I. It was helpful that we were able to pay the cost in instalments, and the total cost was not unreasonable. The cottage we stayed at (Gallery) was on the upper floor of the building, and this gave us a great view rather than just a car park or other buildings. We appreciated the welcome pack that had been left (milk, orange juice, eggs) as well as a decent supply of sugar, tea bags etc. It’s worth noting that a bottle of wine was offered, but we did not take up this as we don’t drink. But that’s a really nice touch. The rooms consisted of a living area / landing, kitchen / dining area, bedroom and bathroom. I have to commend the owners on the bathroom, it was very well designed and well supplied. This is an adults only complex, so if that’s important to you, the quietness will be noticeable. The availability of a laundry facility at a nominal charge plus a small supply of essentials (plus alcoholic gifts!) is also a bonus. We only met the owners briefly but they were very friendly and chatty. As they live on site, it’s good to know they are close at hand in case of any issues. We had never been to Thornton-le-Dale before, it’s a very picturesque village and easy to walk around (the village centre, with its gift shops, bakeries and eateries, is only ten minutes walk). It’s a very pleasant area with Thornton Beck and the famous Beck Isle Cottage among its highlights. The village is also home to Mathewsons Auctions of Bangers & Cash TV show fame, which in itself is worth a visit. We would not hesitate to come back to Station House Cottages again.
