Royal Deeside draws walkers and history enthusiasts for good reason. The valley opens onto Lochnagar to the south and the Cairngorms to the west, with forests, lochs and working farmland filling the space between. Drumniall Cottage sits on a working farm near Dinnet, positioned to take in those southern views and within reach of both the mountains and the historical sites—including Craigievar Castle—that dot the area.

The cottage itself dates from the early 19th century and has been restored without stripping away its character. Two double bedrooms and a bathroom serve four guests. The living room has a wood burner; the kitchen is equipped for self-catering. Bed linen, towels, electricity and Wi-Fi are included. There is no television, but the strong signal means you can stay connected if you need to. The detached property stands next to the owner's home on the farm; smoking is not permitted.

The location works well for couples or small groups who want a base for walking—the cottage itself opens onto paths—or exploring the castles and natural history of the valley. Golden eagles have been spotted in the area, and deer herds occupy the neighbouring glens. You can park on site.

Had a marvellous week in this gorgeous, cosy cottage. Everything you could wish for in a week away from the humdrum of normal life. There maybe no TV, but there are books, games and wildlife to watch right outside the window. If you must watch the box in the corner, there is a wide selection of DVDs to watch on a small monitor screen. All the requirements of modern living, in a charming, quaint and traditional Scottish cottage.
