About The Three Horseshoes

A Sunday roast worth planning a weekend around is the sort of thing The Three Horseshoes has built its reputation on, and this Alton inn backs it up with a menu that also runs to fish pie and a well-regarded lamb burger. Set on Cakers Lane, it keeps the feel of a traditional pub while offering proper accommodation alongside its restaurant and bar.

Rooms are comfortable and straightforward, with breakfast included and free WiFi throughout, plus a packed lunch available for anyone heading out for the day. The pub side of things covers a bar, outdoor seating and a garden that welcomes dogs, and staff are consistently described as friendly and helpful. Free on-site parking and 24-hour reception make arriving and leaving easy at any hour.

Alton's surrounding countryside suits walkers and cyclists, and those keen on golf, fishing or horse riding will find options nearby, alongside further pubs and restaurants in the area. It's a place that delivers on value for money and a warm welcome rather than showy extras, with clean, well-kept facilities throughout.

Just visited here for lunch and what a little hidden gem. It is so bright and airy in this pub. Tables are nicely spread out, not on top of each other. What hits you is how clean and spacious it looks like. We had booked as was worried with it being lunch time we may not have got in but you would have been okay to just turn up. The garden area is amazing, very cosy and lots of lovely sitting areas. Toilets 🚻 super clean, just mind the step up to the ladies toilet as I was to busy looking where door was i didnt see the step 🤦‍♀️. So we were already impressed by the pub then we had food and it completely blew us away as this pub has the whole package, food was tasty, different things to try on menu as well as traditional pub grub. My husband had the lamb burger and said it was the best burger he had ever had. My son had the version steak and it was cooked to perfection. All the extras as well, chips, mushrooms, vegetables all were full of flavour, most definitely freshly souced food here. We all had pudding, I had traditional crumble (proper old style), a malva cake (sure i spelt that wrong but a traditional south africa pudding and it was delicious) and my husband had the grown up milkshake which comes with a shot, he had baileys and said it was great, again just such different take on things. They do lots of specials depending day of the week. Also do a set lunch menu. All in all if you want to try somewhere new as we.did, try here, you wont be disappointed. Also owner/manager was super polite and friendly and treated us like we had be regulars all our life. Please visit you wont be disappointed 🤞 Sorry no photos as too busy tucking in to food

Had a campervan stopover on route to see family. One of the best stopovers we have had. The staff were welcoming and exceptionally friendly and the food was one of the best pub meals we have had for a long time. My wife is a bit dubious about having a lamb shank due to previous experiences but she was extremely impressed with the one at the three horseshoes. My venison steak was well cooked and extremely tasty. All meat is locally sourced. Would come again and would recommend to everyone

I shall start by saying the staff were brilliant, very friendly and welcoming. I have eaten here before and was very impressed, however my recent visit was very disappointing. The set menu priced at £35 for two courses was a big shame as i don't eat much and only wanted a main meal and was forced to pay £35 for it, what was even more shocking was a roast is usually £19 (or one meat) meaning they were charging £16 for a starter or main which is madness in my opinion as usual menu nothing exceeded £9.50. Somone in the party had a salad usually priced at £15 pounds and so a starter or pudding was then £20, you would think ok maybe a higher price means a big portion but between 4 people having roasts a small ramakin of Cauliflower cheese, creamed greens and a carrot parsnip combo with an odd flavour came out, the meat was so thin it seemed like packaged slices from a super market and wasn't great, the salad also had chicken with a funny flavour like it was off. 3 of us had upset stomachs afterwards too. such a shame as i have previously had great Sunday roast experiences and normal menu experiences so much so i have recommended but this time i was highly disappointed on multiple fronts.

Didn't stay so cannot comment on rooms. Its an interesting drive if you follow the satnav! Excellent fixed price lunch. Good beer, lot's of zero choices for drivers. Very friendly and welcoming. Will happily return. Its halfway between some old friends so makes a great spot to meet up.
