About Norwood House
Ambleside sits among the fells at the northern end of Windermere, a well-loved base for walkers and cyclists exploring the Lake District National Park, and Norwood House offers a quiet spot to stay right in the town on Church Street. With only eight rooms across three floors, it has the feel of a proper guest house rather than a large hotel, and each room comes with its own en-suite bathroom and free WiFi.
Mornings bring a cooked breakfast featuring Lakeland meats and other local produce, served before a day out on the fells or by the water. There's a garden to relax in, a games room, a kitchen guests can use, and 24 hour reception for flexible arrivals. Free on-site parking and luggage storage make it easy to settle in without hassle, and pets are welcome too.
Golf, fishing, cycling routes and walking trails are all close by, along with pubs, restaurants and other eateries nearby for evenings out. It's a straightforward, comfortable base for getting out into the Lake District rather than a destination in itself.

We had a wonderful stay at this holiday home for a large group booking. The location was excellent-a short walk to the local amenities and the house was spotless on arrival. The kitchen was clean, spacious, and very well stocked with everything you’d need, and the large dining table easily fitted everyone around it. The WiFi was fast and reliable, the beds were very comfortable, and the bathrooms were well stocked with everything we needed. We especially loved the games room, which was a big hit with the whole group, and the thoughtful touch of the Christmas tree—it really made the place feel extra special. The lounge was fantastic: spacious, comfortable, and perfect for relaxing together; great sofas and loved the wall art . We wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again and would highly recommend it, especially for larger groups.

We stayed at Norwood House, at New Year 2025, shortly after it changed from a B and B to a holiday let. We were a large group of friends with children. The accommodation was perfect for us, right in the heart of Ambleside with all it has to offer. Parking was included which is a massive bonus! The dining room with its extra large table was perfect for meal times and there was plenty of room in the rest of the house to relax and spend time together. The games room downstairs was a massive hit with the kids, in particular. All the bedrooms had blackout blinds and the beds were super comfortable so we all slept really well too. There are lots of fab places to eat and drink on your doorstep but if you want to cook, the house is really well equipped to cater for large groups with plenty of cooking equipment, tableware and glasses etc. It was a great base for exploring not just Ambleside but Windermere and beyond. The more active party members made the most of the walks/hikes, some of which you can literally do from the house, whilst some of us enjoyed just being able to nip out for a potter round the shops or a drink/something to eat. All in all we had the best time at Norwood House and will definitely be back!

Over the years we've stayed in a lot of holiday lets, guest accommodation, etc. I know from previous experience that trying to find somewhere with as many bedrooms as Norwood House is really hard to do, so big tick there, it's great for a large group. When you do find somewhere with plenty of rooms they either seem to have a dining table without enough seats, or a living room without enough sofas. So an even bigger tick for them here because they have both!! The dining table is colossal and (should you choose) you could easily swing several cats at the same time in the living room, with enough seats for everyone to sit and watch!! We stayed with friends over New Year and the owners had put a Christmas tree up, which was a lovely touch. The property is right in the heart of Ambleside, so perfect to feel part of the village. But they've also got plenty of parking spaces a short walk away which is great. All the rooms are ensuite, fast WiFi, HUGE TV in the living room, loads of fridge space, loads and loads of crockery and glassware (why is it so many of these places don't have enough glasses??!), games room in the basement, spotlessly clean. We had a fab time stopping at Norwood House, highly recommended

It was easy to book accommodation at Norwood house. My room was spacious, clean and very comfortable. The WiFi was very good. The breakfast menu met my needs. The owners provide you with a lot of information that visiting guests may need. They are a very welcoming couple. I was particularly impressed with the way Wendy (one of the owners) engaged with all her guests over breakfast as she clearly has a lot of local knowledge and was able to guide guide guests in such a way as to enhance their stay in the lake District.
