A characterful 4-star hotel on the shore of Loch Indaal, known for its seafood restaurant and extensive whisky list.

About Port Charlotte Hotel

The Port Charlotte Hotel stands on the shorefront of one of Islay's prettiest villages, a row of whitewashed buildings on the western side of Loch Indaal that make up a conservation village dating from the 1820s. The hotel's conservatory and gardens open almost directly onto the beach, and many of its rooms look straight out over the water towards the Rinns of Islay.

The kitchen has a strong reputation for fresh seafood landed locally, alongside Islay lamb and beef, served in a restaurant and bar that also holds one of the island's better whisky collections. Public rooms retain a traditional, comfortable character, with open fires and views that change with the tide and weather across Loch Indaal.

Port Charlotte is within easy reach of Bruichladdich and Kilchoman distilleries, the Museum of Islay Life, and Machir Bay's beach, making the hotel a well-placed base for exploring the quieter western half of the island away from the busier southern distillery route.

Fantastic meal and music from wonderfully friendly and helpful staff. Other reviewers have complained about reservation system, but this is clearly an extremely popular destination in holiday season. We noted that timings of bookings are carefully calculated to avoid over-stretching the highly professional kitchen team. All our dishes were served to perfection and I'd have no hesitation in recommending for a special meal. Just have the sense to book ahead. Lorna and the team were outstanding hosts. Moran Taing.

We’ve visited the Oort Charlotte Hotel a number of times over the years when over on Islay, especially for the music nights, and it never disappoints. The atmosphere is always brilliant and it’s become one of the highlights of our trips to the island. A massive shout out to Russ and Gemma behind the bar — both absolute assets to the place. Friendly, welcoming, great banter and they genuinely made our evenings special. Service like that is what keeps people coming back. The music nights are fantastic, full of character and exactly what you want after a day exploring Islay. Only one small negative would be that some of the whisky pricing seems a little strange/inconsistent at times, especially given the incredible local selection available on the island. Overall though, a superb place with a great atmosphere and amazing staff. We’ll definitely be back again next time we’re over on Islay.

We didn’t stay at the hotel but had an exceptional meal at the restaurant. We ordered the seafood platter which was so tasty and a huge portion. I’ve never had such delicious scallops and lobster. Very tasty chips too. The service was beyond perfect. Lorna was a fantastic host and wonderful woman who made us feel very special. The facilities are comfortable and cosy, and the bar in front of the fireplace was the icing on top. Jimmy and Bosia were also great staff who deserve a mention. They even sang happy birthday and had a candle on the desert for my partner’s birthday. Absolutely recommend!

Lovely to return to the PCH this June. Been coming here for many a year and delighted to see Kenny behind the bar again who still remembered me from my many visits. We were 4 for dinner and ate in the main bar which is my preferred location - the conservatory downstairs has more space, but you feel away from the action down there. Dinner and service were good.
