Royal Sportsman Hotel

We stayed during the recent heat wave. The rooms were too hot for comfort and needed air conditioning. That and the street noise (our room was at the front) made the physical conditions challenging. The food was beautifully cooked and served in a pleasant retro feel dining area. The breakfasts (we had only fruit and yogurt) were good but more of a fruit mix in the bowl is needed - far too much reliance on melon to fill it out. The staff were outstanding - the restaurant servers/waiting staff were so helpful, receptive and friendly, very professional and every one of them deserves to be congratulated without exception. Reception staff too were most helpful including with travel and bus advice. At the end of the day it’s about the people and management should be proud of them.

Arriving at the hotel on a fine but cold afternoon we went to our courtyard groundfloor room. The window was wide open. The room was satisfactory but very cold. We went to put on the heating but was informed that it came on automatically later.this turned out to be for 2hours from 6pm.it then came on again the following morning at about 6 am again for 2 hours.So we had a cold afternoon and night. For our evening meal we chose pate and prawns followed by steak and ale pie and a vegetable lasagne. The pie was thick pastry with very little meat which was half eaten and left. The lasagne looked like a ready meal with gratted cheddar on top.again half left,. Food choice was disappointing and expensive for what it was. We visit the area frequently but would not stay there again. As to only being in a warm room at the discretion of management enough said.

The hotel does not look that preposessing from the outside, but it is well worth going through the doors. Both staff and food are first class, but without the accompanying prices. There were seven of us and we had a really enjoyable stay

A good location for exploring Porthmadog and surrounding area. A bonus that there is uncover parking. Staff were very friendly and attentive. Our room was located on the first floor and overlooked the main street which was not a problem. The room was large and tastefully decorated and clean we found there was not a lot of storage space - as we were only there for 4 nights we managed but you would have struggled if there for longer. We had dinner in the restaurant on two evenings and enjoyed the menu choices, food was served piping hot. Breakfast was also good. Would definitely stay there again.
