A 44-room hotel on Southampton's High Street, handy for transport links and the city's restaurants and bars.

About The Star Hotel

Southampton's High Street is the setting for The Star Hotel, a 44-room base within easy reach of the city's transport links and attractions. It's a straightforward, well-placed option for anyone wanting to explore the city on foot or move on quickly by rail or road.

Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms, family options for those travelling with children, and drinks available in-room, though some rooms are showing their age and there's no air conditioning, so it's worth bearing in mind in warmer months. A lift serves the building, and the bar and garden with outdoor seating give guests places to relax beyond the bedroom. Breakfast is generous and well regarded, and staff are consistently described as friendly and helpful.

Beyond the hotel, the surrounding area offers golf and fishing nearby, plus pubs, restaurants and entertainment within easy reach for evenings out. Meeting rooms and luggage storage are also on hand, making this a practical choice for business stopovers as well as leisure breaks, with the central location and fair pricing standing out as its main strengths.

I absolutely love this hotel I stayed last night and it reminded me of the grand hotel in Brighton.. I love the the way it's steeped in history and I had the best nights sleep. Comfy mattress the water has a softener the breakfast was filling and fantastic. I will be staying again but will be making the most of it as I finished work at 11pm and had to get my car to the garage early in the morning. The staff made me feel so welcome.. By the way I love the old fashioned quirky lift... This is definitely my kinda hotel.

We chose this location because of the short distance to port. A fantastic pub Wetherspoons the standing order right next-door. Easy walking distance to lots of food and drink options as well as several local historical sites, including the Mayflower memorial and some ruins. Is the fact that the rooms do not have any air-conditioning! They provide a small fan in each room. We took cold showers before jumping into bed.

The Star hotel is perfectly located in the very centre of Southampton. Staff couldn’t be more helpful. The ladies always have a warm, genuine & happy smile on their faces. Self motivated, they seem to love their jobs. Busy & efficient but always with time for you. Whether to ensure you’re content with your room, want more toast, bacon, eggs, mushrooms, coffee, etc with your hearty breakfast …do have breakfast, you won’t regret it… in this Heritage Grade B? listed, characterful former coaching inn, now hotel, with impressive staircase and landing as well as a working ‘Art Deco’ lift. My double room with separate en suite shower room was clean, bright & spacious. On each of the three nights I stayed here. I immediately fell asleep the moment my head hit the pillow in the lovely shiny nickel, antique style, King Size bed. Don’t be put off by the comments about grumpy or unfriendly staff. Be nice to people and they’ll be nice & friendly back, even the apparently ‘grumpy man’ on reception. So why does a big city centre, perfectly located 3 star hotel, appear rather cheap? Well it’s not the Grand in Brighton, the White Swan in Stratford upon Avon or the White Hart in Lincoln - All of which are much lovelier, with commensurately much more expensive 4 star nightly rates - and the Star hasn’t had a newsworthy IRA bomb go off on the 6th floor (…only 4 floors) or doesn’t have super costly ‘and so to bed’ bed frames in beautiful Stratford or the surrounding Cathedral, Castle and Steep Hill in Lincoln. However, only the Star is in the heart of Southampton. To be fair though, the Star could really do with a lick of paint. Make that two licks. Don’t get me wrong, the Star hotel is charming, characterful and clean, with lovely staff but a bit too much patina and the price reflects that. I’d call it low cost rather than cheap. There is a difference: Repaint a cheap characterless hotel in the middle of nowhere and it’ll still be a cheap characterless hotel in the middle of nowhere. Give this lovely old building its deserved licks of paint and it’ll be a Refreshed and enhanced hotel, same great location, same lovely staff, same smiling ‘grumpy man’ on reception and the smell of fresh paint but the price you pay will very likely go up. Should you decide to go and you’re not happy with anything - Bear in mind what you’re paying and - politely ask or tell a member of staff and they’ll go out of their way to try and help you. Don’t expect a lot & you may well be delighted. If you’re paying comparatively little and are, rather arrogantly, expecting perfection. Don’t go. You will be disappointed. Me, would I recommend or stay at the Star Southampton again?.. Yes, on both counts. The staff are brilliant and the somewhat tired looking hotel has a certain charm, a je ne sais quoi about it. You pays your money and you makes your choice.

The hotel was advertised as having air conditioning and laundry. Two of the items we needed prior to our cruise the following day. The hotel has neither. They gamed Expedia specifically about the laundry and said it was available but when we requested it at the front desk it wasn’t available. I accidentally ran into the housekeepers and quizzed them about the service and they explained that they only do housekeeping and not guests laundry she had no idea what the front desk was talking about. We ended up going to another much nicer hotel for a cheaper last minute rate and would suggest others do the same. Further to this, they refused a refund despite not providing the services they advertised. Beware they are using paid reviews to improve their Google rating.
