Station House Cottages - The Station House
York
View on Google MapsPhoto: Station House Cottages
A Victorian station house converted for holiday letting, The Station House retains the character of its railway past—original fireplaces, a sweeping wrought-iron staircase—while meeting contemporary expectations for comfort. The property stands in Upper Poppleton, a residential neighbourhood 3 miles from York city centre, next to the working level crossing of the York to Harrogate railway line.
The ground floor holds a living room with television, a double bedroom with en-suite shower, and a large kitchen-dining room equipped for proper cooking: two electric ovens, hob, dishwasher, microwave, fridge and freezer, plus a washer-dryer. Upstairs, a second double and a zip-and-link room that converts between kingsize and twin beds share a bathroom with bath and separate shower. The property sleeps six and comes as a whole house to yourselves. Essentials including electricity, wi-fi, bed linen and towels are covered. A small enclosed courtyard with seating overlooks the garden. One car parks on site; additional spaces are available on the road.
Upper Poppleton has its own amenities—butchers, cafés, a tennis court and choice of local pubs—though most guests are within easy reach of York's shops, restaurants and historic centre. The cottage does not permit smoking.

We were delighted with our break at Station House Cottages. The accommodation was perfect for my wife and I. It was helpful that we were able to pay the cost in instalments, and the total cost was not unreasonable. The cottage we stayed at (Gallery) was on the upper floor of the building, and this gave us a great view rather than just a car park or other buildings. We appreciated the welcome pack that had been left (milk, orange juice, eggs) as well as a decent supply of sugar, tea bags etc. It’s worth noting that a bottle of wine was offered, but we did not take up this as we don’t drink. But that’s a really nice touch. The rooms consisted of a living area / landing, kitchen / dining area, bedroom and bathroom. I have to commend the owners on the bathroom, it was very well designed and well supplied. This is an adults only complex, so if that’s important to you, the quietness will be noticeable. The availability of a laundry facility at a nominal charge plus a small supply of essentials (plus alcoholic gifts!) is also a bonus. We only met the owners briefly but they were very friendly and chatty. As they live on site, it’s good to know they are close at hand in case of any issues. We had never been to Thornton-le-Dale before, it’s a very picturesque village and easy to walk around (the village centre, with its gift shops, bakeries and eateries, is only ten minutes walk). It’s a very pleasant area with Thornton Beck and the famous Beck Isle Cottage among its highlights. The village is also home to Mathewsons Auctions of Bangers & Cash TV show fame, which in itself is worth a visit. We would not hesitate to come back to Station House Cottages again.
