About Impossible Motel

Saint Helen's Square sits right in the heart of York, within easy reach of the Minster and the city's historic core, and it's here that Impossible Motel makes its home. This is an adults-only hotel with 21 rooms, several styled with their own jacuzzis or private hot tubs for guests wanting something a bit more indulgent than the standard city stay.

Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms, drinks available in-room, and the practical extras of free WiFi and luggage storage, while concierge services are on hand for anything guests need sorting during their stay. That said, the character of the rooms varies, and some have been let down by patchy upkeep, so it's worth bearing in mind alongside the more striking suites. A restaurant and bar operate on site, with breakfast included, giving guests the option to stay in rather than venture out.

Location is one of the hotel's strongest cards: pubs, restaurants and eateries surround the square, and golf, fishing and entertainment are all within reach nearby for those wanting to explore beyond the city walls. Staff are consistently noted as friendly and helpful, which goes some way to smoothing over any rough edges in the rooms themselves.

We stayed at the Impossible Hotel in York - Room 10 - for a naughty little night away and honestly… it was brilliant! The whole place is dark, sexy, and has a bit of a strip-club vibe in the best possible way 😂 Definitely not your typical hotel, but that’s exactly what made it so fun. Our room had mirrored ceilings (yes… really 😏), a huge two-person bathtub, and an amazing rain shower. The bathroom is basically part of the bedroom and there’s no door on the toilet, which might be a bit awkward if it’s a first date – we’ve been together 15 years and even we were like “well, this is different!” But honestly, it just added to the experience and made the night even more memorable. The hotel is also perfectly located, really close to all the cocktail bars, which made it ideal for a fun night out in York. The walls did seem a bit thin… hopefully nobody heard us – but who cares, we had an amazing time 😅 The staff were super friendly, there were chocolates on the pillow when we arrived, tea and coffee facilities in the room, a good TV, and the bathroom was absolutely stunning. And yes… the mirrored ceiling was a lot of fun 😉 If you’re staying in York and feeling a little naughty, this place is a must-visit. It’s definitely an experience rather than just a hotel stay, and we would 100% stay again! 😈

The room we stayed in was one of the more expensive rooms with a hot tub. We booked to stay over a Monday and Tuesday. The room itself was very small, too smal for the charge. There is a small railing to hang clothes, but just putting our coats there meant there was no room for anything else if we wanted to walk by the bed. It is nicely decorated but the mirror over the bed was filthy and there were little additional amenities considering the extortionate pricing. There was not so much as a fridge in the room and you had to pay extra for a coffee machine and pods, which is given free in many much cheaper hotels. The hot tub itself was great and worked well, but the outside furniture had clearly not been cared for at all. The decorations were completely rusted and deteriorating and the seat covers were wet and dirty - clearly hadn’t been cleaned in a while. The lights are led around the edge of the room and the two bedside lights are small - because the room is so small. Because of this, at night you cannot see in the room at all. We had to use torch lights on our phones to be able to look into our bags, even with everything switched on. The staff however were lovely and were accommodating where needed. The hotel is also in a great location in the centre of York. If I did return to York, however, I would be staying somewhere else. It was really disappointing as it is marketed as a luxury stay, but I’ve stayed in much cheaper hotels and had far better quality.

We booked a room for 2 days specifically for the bath, on arrival were told bath wasnt working, we spotted the sink wasn't draining either. We were offered another room but only for one day, but we didnt want to repack and move halfway through - what was the point in a 2 day stay otherwise? We were told maintenance was coming to fix bath and that we would need to vacate the room while they did. We remarked once more that the sink didn't drain, and smelt of stagnant water. Maintenance failed to fix the bath or sink despite our vacating the room for 6 hours so we still couldn't use it on day two - and by then the sink (and room) reeked of blocked drains. Desk staff did their best with 2 bottles of apologetic prosecco but management refused any sort of refund, instead offering a derisory voucher of a small discount on "our next stay" in a hotel we will never use again. It was an absolute waste of our money. Hotel trades on novelty value, but drainage poor, hygiene poor, management (very hard to contact, I wonder why) respond with "tough luck, we have your money now". York has many fine hotels - some very close by and far better. AVOID THIS if you value clean water and hygienic bathrooms.

Me and my partner booked one of the basement rooms, upon arrival we found the room to smell quite damp. I went and spoke to reception and he was extremely helpful offering us a different room on the higher floors due to us having asthma. We were extremely happy we still got to enjoy our stay. Thanks again :)
