About The Roman Bath
The Roman Bath takes its name from the excavated remains beneath the building, a genuine piece of Roman York that guests can explore alongside their stay. It's an adults-only hotel on Saint Sampsons Square, within easy reach of the ancient city walls, the Jorvik Viking Centre and York Minster, putting most of the city's historic sights within walking distance.
Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms and drinks provided, and the hotel offers free WiFi and 24 hour reception, so arrival times are flexible. There's a bar on site for a drink before heading out, and parking is available for those travelling by car.
Beyond the excavation itself, the surrounding area has plenty to fill a stay, with pubs, restaurants and entertainment all nearby, plus golf and fishing options for guests wanting to venture further afield. The underground bath remains are a genuine draw, with staff on hand to explain the history and even let visitors try on Roman clothing and helmets, at a reasonable admission cost.

I have visited several Roman baths in the UK, but this is the first time I have seen one as unique as this one. This bath is located in the basement of a pub. Although small, it is equipped with everything found in other Roman baths, including hot and cold baths. It was nice to be able to look around leisurely for a small admission fee. At the end of the museum, there is a photo zone where you can try holding models of Roman legionary armor, shields, and gladiuses. The Roman shield, the scutum, was heavier than I expected, but it was a very fun experience.

We visited the Roman Bath pub and museum today. The museum is £4.50 per person (card accepted) and Dave talked us through the history of the baths, from when it was built to when it was rediscovered. The museum opens up into the pub and we had a nice drink in the beer garden. Nice to visit a little known gem within York city centre!

At first I found it a bit expensive, then I realized the money will be used to preserve and improve this gem so I was keen to pay. A wonderful idea, to give both the museum and the pub the name Roman Bath, even though at the pub you might get distracted by the 6 screens displaying Arsenal-Manchester City and lose your orientation about Roman history. By the way an absolute must is the beer Roman Guest, which is delicious. The museum is small, a bit untidy, but the view of the calidarium foundations is just majestic. The historically thick air, so dense of Roman genius, will immediately give you the impression you’re witnessing one of the highlights of the whole city. Graeme explanation, brief and passionate, is an absolute added value. He’s the key to increase your romanity from 0 to 100 in just 2 minutes. I hope the museum can be enlarged and get more historical importance soon. If you don’t have imagination, it’s easy to relegate it to the role of mere curiosity. If you have imagination, a vivid historical one, you’ll feel like sitting with the ancient Romans in the hot tub after a tiring day checking if there’s any Pict at the horizon.

A small but interesting museum. Genuine Roman excavations of Roman Baths, just under the Roman Bath pub (strangely enough). It's not a large area at all, but fascinating how the Romans had underground heating, solarium and running water toilets 2000 years ago. The entrance is down stairs from the pub, the visit will take about 10 mins but if you are interested in local history, it's worth a visit.
