About The Waggon And Horses Inn

York's Lawrence Street sits within easy reach of the city centre and its main transport links, making it a handy base for exploring North Yorkshire. The Waggon And Horses Inn occupies a spot here, combining a working pub with a small, adults-only hotel above it.

There are just six rooms, kept simple and comfortable, with free WiFi and drinks available in-room. Downstairs, the bar is the heart of the place, offering a rotating selection of hand-pulled ales and guest beers alongside a snack bar and full breakfast each morning. A weekly pub quiz draws a regular crowd and adds to the sociable, welcoming atmosphere the staff and owners are known for. A garden, luggage storage, meeting rooms and concierge services round out the practical side, and free on-site parking is a genuine plus in a city where that's not always easy to come by.

Outside, the surrounding area suits walkers and cyclists, with golf nearby for those wanting it, plus a good spread of pubs, restaurants and entertainment within easy reach. It's a straightforward, characterful place to stay rather than a grand one, with the pub itself very much part of the experience.

Been coming here for months, will continue to do so, and wouldn't change a single thing! Fantastic atmosphere, wonderful selection of drinks, with staff and owners that are endlessly helpful and lovely. The weekly quiz is always a highlight - a fun and entertaining night every time. Just a lovely cosy local pub that always makes you feel welcome. Plus, can never go wrong with a pub that has such a sweet dog!

Excellent pub with rooms close to the city walls and centre. The pub itself is a busy alehouse with an excellent selection of hand pull ales and good variety of wines and spirits. The rooms are very comfortable and clean and the breakfast was brilliant. It included a good selection of cereals and pastries but star turn was the full breakfast. Delicious! The staff were very friendly and helpful and the room rates were good. A great place for locals or visitors.

Great place, with a fantastic atmosphere and service. The owners and the bar staff are super friendly and welcoming, and the weekly pub quiz is always fun and has become a routine for me and my friends! My pub of choice in all of York!

Absolutely awful experience at the Waggon and Horses. The place is dirty, run down, and has a horrible smell as soon as you walk in. There was dirt all over the glasses, the booze tasted stale and cheap, and the whole pub feels like it’s been neglected for years. In my opinion - genuine health hazard. The owner and her partner are rude, miserable, and completely unwelcoming. The way they speak to customers and the staff behind the bar is embarrassing and obnoxious and it’s obvious the place is badly run. The atmosphere is uncomfortable from start to finish. The quiz night was dreadful as well — painfully awkward and boring, I’d genuinely rather watch paint dry. York has so many decent pubs with friendly people and clean environments, so there’s no reason to waste your time here. Definitely won’t be back and I’d advise people to stay well away. The only positive is the attitude of the young members of staff behind the bar, I didn’t manage to grab their names but they deserve more!
