Crewkerne's appeal for campers is the rolling, uncrowded countryside that surrounds it — proper south Somerset farmland rather than a stretch of coast, with the added draw of Ham Hill Country Park, Clapton Court's gardens and the wooded walks at Wayford within easy reach. As everywhere in England, wild camping on open land is illegal without the landowner's express permission, so plan around one of the region's established touring parks and campsites, several of which are working farms just outside town offering pitches for tents, tourers and motorhomes alongside glamping options such as shepherd's huts and pods for those who'd rather not pitch a tent at all.
The terrain around Crewkerne is gently hilly rather than dramatic, with a mix of pasture, hedgerowed lanes and pockets of ancient woodland, so it suits families and less experienced campers as much as seasoned walkers. Nights can still turn cool even in summer thanks to the elevation towards Ham Hill and the open aspect of the surrounding farmland, so it's worth packing for a range of conditions regardless of season. The most comfortable camping window runs from late spring to early autumn, roughly April through September, when the ground is drier underfoot, the gardens and country parks are at their best, and long daylight hours leave plenty of time for walking or cycling before dark. Bank holiday weekends and the September Agricultural Show period get busy locally, so booking a pitch ahead is worthwhile at those times.
Beyond the campsite gate, Crewkerne's location is a genuine advantage: the Jurassic Coast at Lyme Regis and Charmouth is a manageable drive south, while Yeovil, Sherborne and the wider Somerset Levels open up to the north and east, giving campers based here a realistic day-trip radius that takes in coast, countryside and historic towns without constant long drives.
