About Another Place, The Machrie

Another Place, The Machrie occupies an 18th-century farmhouse and modern extension set among the dunes of Machrie Bay, on Islay's Atlantic-facing west coast. The 43 rooms, suites and family lodges are calm and contemporary, many looking straight out over the golf links to the sea, with the informal design ethos shared across the Another Place group evident throughout.

The hotel sits on its own championship links course, one of the most distinctive and least altered in Scotland, and pairs golf with a spa-like outdoor sauna and hot tub garden, a screening room and a changing collection of modern art. The restaurant leans on Islay produce, particularly seafood and lamb, with an extensive list of the island's whiskies to match.

Machrie Bay itself is a short walk from the hotel across the links, one of the quietest and longest beaches on the island, while Port Ellen and its distilleries are around fifteen minutes away by car and Islay Airport is closer still, making this a genuinely easy base for a whisky-focused stay without sacrificing scenery or comfort.

We spent one night at The Machrie in a double bedroom and lodge, and it exceeded our expectations. The staff were incredibly friendly, the atmosphere relaxed, and the dinner was outstanding — truly exceptional flavours. The golf course is breathtaking and gives you that unmistakable island vibe. Everywhere you look, the décor reflects the long history of golf, which makes the place feel both authentic and special. We’ll definitely come back.

Loved it here and was blessed with amazing weather. Golf course was in superb condition and enjoyed 18 holes. The 6 hole and putting course are also awesome and great to do with the family. Staff very friendly. Food was fantastic and thoroughly enjoyed both dinner and breakfast. Callum was also great with our son and very accommodating.

Had a fantastic time playing the Machrie. The service getting us set up was spot on, and the course itself is a blast—genuinely challenging but incredibly fun, with spectacular coastal views the whole way around. We didn’t stay overnight, but the hotel looks beautiful, and the bar is exceptionally well-stocked for a post-round drink. Highly recommend checking it out if you're on Islay!

Level 7 here I come

Great but expensive place to stay on Islay. The restaurant was fantastic, the rooms were huge and we'll maintained. The bar was open late and our server for dinners was super helpful. The view from the beach was gorgeous and if I liked golf, I'm sure the course is great. Place even has a sauna, hot tub and cold plunge. The hot tub didn't have jets and was more like a warm bath, but still lots of fun.
