Camping in Telscombe

Telscombe sits inside the South Downs National Park, so the open chalk grassland of Telscombe Tye and the surrounding farmland look tempting for a night under canvas, but wild camping without the landowner's permission is against the law in England, and the Tye itself is registered common land grazed by sheep rather than a legal camping spot. Anyone wanting to sleep out here needs to book a proper site or seek explicit permission from the farmer or landowner first; turning up and pitching a tent on the Downs is not allowed and can also disturb livestock and ground-nesting birds.

The good news is that the wider South Downs around Telscombe are well set up for camping done properly. Licensed campsites and glamping pitches in the villages around Lewes, Rodmell, Southease and along the Ouse Valley put you within a short walk or cycle ride of the South Downs Way, with the same chalk grassland, big skies and sea views that make Telscombe Tye special, but without the legal grey area. Many are working farms that welcome campers as a sideline, so expect simple, low-key fields rather than resort-style facilities, plus the odd flock of sheep for company.

The terrain here is classic South Downs: rolling chalk hills, close-cropped turf, dry valleys and steep-sided coombes, with thin, free-draining soil that copes well with summer weather but can get exposed and breezy since there is little tree cover once you are up on the open downland. Facilities on the Tye itself are minimal, so a tent pitched nearby needs to be self-sufficient. Late spring to early autumn is the best window, when the ground is driest and the days long enough for an evening walk up to the burial mounds and dew pond before dark; a coastal breeze off the Channel means it can feel cooler here than a few miles inland, so it is worth packing for wind even in midsummer.

For anyone who would rather skip the tent poles altogether, glamping sites dotted around the Lewes and Ouse Valley area offer bell tents, shepherd's huts and yurts with proper beds and sometimes a wood-fired hot tub, giving the same downland views and dark, star-filled skies with rather more comfort. It is a good compromise for a short break that still feels like sleeping out on the Downs.
