What guests say
Lovely old building with lots of history. Perfect location for Windermere and other villages. Staff were polite and friendly. Food was a much higher standard than anticipated. We were pleasantly suprised. Very hot, quick service and tasty good food. Lounge was authentic to the age and smart, a lovely area to sit and unwind. Bedrooms decent, a little tired in places but spotless clean with immaculate bedding and comfy mattress and pillows. Place was quite and we slept well. This hotel sometimes has not so good reviews but we don't know why, we felt they were unfair. We found no fault and neither did alot of people we spoke to. We would recommend staying for the price and location and would stay again.

Perfect location for a weekend in the lakes, easy access to both Windermere and Bowness. Staff were friendly and the rooms were clean and tidy. Would certainly return

“Like walking into Fawlty Towers…” The Windermere Hotel really does feel like walking into Fawlty Towers — quite dated but cosy in its own way. Our room was very small and compact, definitely in need of an upgrade considering what we paid. It was warm (a little too warm at night), but we did have plenty of hot water and a good shower. We stayed with our dachshund and were given a room that had clearly been used by other dogs — Stan could definitely smell them! We thought the dog charge was £20 per stay, but it turned out to be £20 per night, which felt steep, especially since there were no extras for dogs (no treats, bowls, or blankets like you get elsewhere) We booked 3 nights bed and breakfast but ended up leaving after 2 because we both slept terribly — the mattress was very uncomfortable, and we could hear constant noise from the rooms above. It left me with a sore back. Although we understand still having to pay for the room, we also had to pay the extra night for the dog, which didn’t feel very fair. We were told the dog charge covers a “deep clean,” but again, there’s nothing extra provided for pets. Breakfast was served in a separate room from the main restaurant, as the restaurant isn’t dog friendly. On a positive note, the Orrest Bar was lovely — we enjoyed a nice meal there with Stan and had fun playing dominoes. Overall, it was an expensive stay for what we got. We told reception why we were checking out early, but the response was simply, “Nothing we can do, sorry.” Unfortunately, not a hotel I’d return to.

My wife and I visited on 30/05 for a friend’s work leaving do. We parked onsite, gave our registration to the barman who confirmed it would be validated. We then spent a considerable amount at the bar that evening. Six weeks later, we received a parking fine. I returned to the same hotel and was told by a member of reception that it would be “quashed.” That assurance was clearly meaningless — five months later we’re now facing a £170 debt collection fee from Debt Recovery Plus, accompanied by threatening correspondence. This isn’t a misunderstanding. It’s systemic failure and poor staff training. Two separate employees told us our parking was covered — neither did a thing. So, to future guests: beware. You might think you’re parking as instructed, but you’ll end up paying for their mistakes. And yes, I fully expect the usual copy-paste response about the “validation system working fine.” It clearly doesn’t. Two visits, two empty promises. Not good enough.
