Pitches range from simple grass spots with no services to fully serviced hardstanding, so there is a reasonable spread of options whether you are after a rustic back-to-nature stay or something a little more comfortable. Facilities are geared towards families and walkers, with the Top Lodge visitor centre, café and trailheads right on the doorstep, making it easy to step straight from your tent onto woodland paths in search of red kites and deer.

As with anywhere in England, wild camping in the wood itself is not permitted without the landowner's permission, so the official Forestry England site is the only legitimate option for pitching up in Fineshade – a rule worth bearing in mind given how tempting the deeper, quieter parts of the forest can look. Booking ahead is sensible, particularly in the school holidays and over the red kite nesting season in spring, when demand for pitches close to the wildlife hide picks up noticeably.

The terrain around Fineshade is typical of Rockingham Forest: gently undulating limestone woodland with a mix of open rides and denser plantation, easy enough underfoot in dry weather but capable of turning muddy after rain, so a decent pair of boots and some rugged tent pegs are worth packing. Late spring through to early autumn is the most comfortable stretch for camping, with long daylight hours for exploring and a good chance of catching the bluebells or the height of the birdwatching season, though the forest is atmospheric even in a cooler, quieter autumn stay. Those who prefer a roof that is a little more solid than canvas, or want to dodge the British weather altogether, will find glamping pods, bell tents and safari-style accommodation more readily available at other Forestry England sites in the wider region, giving a soft-adventure alternative without straying too far from the same forest landscape.
