Fitzrovia

Places to eat in Fitzrovia, London

There's no river or hill to speak of in Fitzrovia, but the area has its own defining geography: the grid of streets running north from Oxford Street towards Euston Road, bounded by Tottenham Court Road and Great Portland Street. It's a part of London built for walking between things, and what fills the gaps between the Georgian terraces and office blocks is, overwhelmingly, places to eat. With 101 restaurants listed here, Fitzrovia has one of the highest concentrations of dining in central London.

Charlotte Street is the spine of it all, a run of restaurants and pavement tables that fills up at lunchtime with people from the surrounding offices and stays busy into the evening. 74 Charlotte Street by Ben Murphy sits along here, one of several kitchens that have made the street a destination in its own right rather than just a route between Goodge Street and the BT Tower. Goodge Street itself adds to the mix, with 64 Goodge Street among the addresses worth knowing.

Fitzrovia doesn't have hotels in the way that some London neighbourhoods do; it's a place people pass through and eat in rather than stay in for a fixed break. That said, its position between the West End and Bloomsbury means it works well as a base if you are visiting London for a short stint and want somewhere central but a notch quieter than Soho.

The range on offer reflects the area's mix of long-standing local spots and newer arrivals. Kitchen Table is a name diners travel across the city for. Elsewhere the choice runs wide: 3 Gorges and Aces Foodcraft for those wanting something more casual, Agra Restaurant and Agrodolce London for Indian and Italian respectively, and UVA Cantina bringing a different flavour again. It's a neighbourhood where you could eat a different cuisine every night for a month and not repeat yourself.

Fitzrovia works well as a stop before or after a wander through Regent's Park to the north or a look round the shops on Oxford Street to the south. But most people come here specifically to eat, choosing a street and letting whichever restaurant catches their eye decide the rest of the evening.
