Camping in Potterhanworth

Potterhanworth sits in classic Lincolnshire farmland fringed by ancient woodland, and while the village itself has no campsite, the surrounding countryside offers plenty of scope for a short camping or glamping break. As with anywhere in England, wild camping without the landowner's permission is against the law, so pitching up in Potterhanworth Wood or the surrounding fields isn't an option; any camping needs to be on a registered site or with explicit permission from the farmer or landowner.

The terrain here is gentle and largely flat, typical of the Lincolnshire heath, which makes it easy going for tents, campervans and anyone touring by bike, in contrast to the hillier Wolds further north-east. Nearby North Kesteven villages and the outskirts of Lincoln have a scattering of small campsites and caravan parks, generally simple, family-run affairs rather than large holiday parks, so it's worth booking ahead in peak season. For something a little more comfortable, glamping pods and shepherd's huts crop up on farms across Lincolnshire, offering a step up from a tent while still keeping you close to the countryside.

Late spring through early autumn, roughly May to September, is the best window for camping here, when the woodland is at its greenest and evenings are long enough for a walk among the limes of Potterhanworth Wood before dark. Ground conditions on the flatter farmland can turn heavy after rain, so a site with reasonable drainage is worth seeking out if visiting outside the driest months. Given the modest scale of local provision, this is a destination better suited to a quiet couple of nights than a long camping holiday, ideally combined with day trips into Lincoln or out to the Wolds.
