Camping in Capel-Le-Ferne

Capel-le-Ferne itself has no campsite on its clifftop, and it is worth remembering that wild camping without the landowner's explicit permission is illegal in England, including on National Trust and other open-access land along the White Cliffs. That said, the surrounding Kent countryside has a good spread of licensed campsites and glamping sites within a short drive, making it entirely possible to base a stay near the cliffs without a hotel. The terrain here is a factor worth planning around: the clifftop is exposed chalk grassland with little shelter from wind coming straight off the Channel, so sites set back from the immediate cliff edge, often in the more sheltered farmland just inland, tend to offer a more comfortable pitch than anything directly exposed to the sea.

The best camping season runs from late spring through to early autumn, when long days suit the coastal walking that is the main reason to visit, and when the wildflower grassland around the Battle of Britain Memorial is at its most colourful. Summer weekends and the September Battle of Britain anniversary period are the busiest times, so booking ahead is sensible. Outside these months, exposed cliff-top camping is a much harder prospect, with strong winds and driving rain rolling in off the Channel with little warning.

For those who prefer not to pitch a tent, glamping has become an increasingly popular way to enjoy this stretch of Kent coastline, with shepherd's huts, bell tents and small camping pods available at sites inland from Capel-le-Ferne, typically within a short drive of Folkestone, Dover and the coastal path. These give easy access to the clifftop walks and the memorial site by day, with a proper bed and some shelter from the Channel weather by night, a reasonable compromise on a coastline that offers spectacular views but very little natural cover.
