Camping in Firle

There are no official campsites within Firle village itself, and, as with the rest of England, wild camping on the South Downs is not permitted without the landowner's explicit permission, since almost all of this land, including much of the Firle Estate, is privately owned. That said, the wider South Downs National Park around Firle has a good scattering of small, well-run campsites and glamping sites within a few miles, many on working farms with views back towards Firle Beacon and the ridge of the Downs. These tend to be simple, family-run affairs with basic facilities, geared towards walkers on the South Downs Way and cyclists rather than large-scale holiday parks, which suits the quiet, understated character of this part of Sussex.

The terrain around Firle is classic chalk downland: steep, close-cropped grass slopes giving way to farmland and small wooded combes, so pitches tend to be gently sloping rather than flat, and exposed hilltop spots can be breezy even in summer. The best season for camping here runs from late spring to early autumn, when the ground is driest and the downland wildflowers and long evening light make for excellent walking straight from the tent. Outside these months, chalk paths turn slick and exposed sites can be genuinely cold, so glamping options with proper insulation are the more comfortable choice for shoulder-season trips.

Glamping has taken off around Firle in recent years, with shepherd's huts, safari tents and small bell tent set-ups appearing on farms in the surrounding villages, offering a more comfortable way to experience the same views and access to the South Downs Way without needing full camping kit. These sites typically book up fast for summer weekends given how few there are, so early planning pays off, especially around Firle Place's open days or the village's bonfire celebrations in autumn, when local accommodation of every kind is in high demand.
