Broughton-in-Furness and its surrounding Duddon Valley offer some of the most peaceful camping in the Lake District, but wild camping remains illegal in England without the explicit permission of the landowner, so pitching up on the fells or by the estuary without asking first is not an option here, unlike the informal tradition long tolerated in parts of Scotland. Fortunately the area has a good spread of small, family-run campsites and farm pitches that welcome tents and touring caravans with the landowner's blessing built in, many of them on working sheep farms on the fells between Coniston Water and the Duddon Estuary, or with views out across the Duddon Sands towards Black Combe.

The terrain around Broughton is gentler than the high central fells, with rolling sheep pasture, oak woodland and the wide tidal estuary shaping the landscape rather than dramatic peaks, which makes it a good choice for campers who want fell walking and cycling within reach without needing to tackle the busiest routes up Scafell Pike or Helvellyn. The Duddon Valley itself, running north through Ulpha and Seathwaite, has long stretches of quiet, wooded valley floor that suit gentler walks, river swimming spots and cycling, with the more serious ascents of the Old Man of Coniston and the Furness Fells accessible via a short drive.

Late spring through early autumn is the most reliable camping season, with May and June bringing bluebells and fresh green oak canopy to the valley woods, and September offering settled weather and thinning crowds before the fells turn wet and the nights draw in. Midges and rain are a factor at any point in the Lake District, so a good pitch with tree cover is worth seeking out. For those who prefer a roof without giving up the outdoor feel, glamping options in the area include shepherd's huts, safari tents and converted farm buildings, several of them on the same working farms that host tent pitches, giving easy access to the Duddon Valley, Swinside Stone Circle and the estuary without the need to pack a full camping kit.
