There is no legal wild camping in England without the landowner's permission, so anyone wanting to camp near Bulwick should head for a proper site rather than pitching in the surrounding fields or woodland. The obvious choice is Fineshade Wood Campsite, a Forestry England site a few miles north of the village, set within the ancient woodland of Rockingham Forest. It offers grass pitches for tents alongside electric hardstanding for caravans and motorhomes, welcomes dogs, and sits a short walk from a visitor centre with a café and bike hire, making it a genuinely practical base for exploring the forest on foot or by bike. The terrain around Bulwick and Fineshade is gentle rather than dramatic: rolling farmland, brooks and pockets of ancient woodland rather than hills, which makes for easy, low-effort walking and cycling straight from the tent.
The best camping season here runs from late spring through to early autumn, when the woodland trails are driest underfoot and the site's waymarked walks, from the easy Smelters' Walk to longer routes with forest views, are at their most rewarding. Summer evenings are particularly pleasant, with long daylight hours to make use of the campsite's trails and nearby pub. Spring visits catch Bulwick Meadows SSSI at its best, when the wetland flora on the edge of the village is in flower and breeding snipe can sometimes be heard nearby. Winter camping is possible but much quieter, with shorter days and colder, often waterlogged ground in the ancient woodland.
For those who prefer a roof and four walls but still want the forest setting, glamping options in the wider Rockingham Forest and Northamptonshire area include shepherd's huts, pods and safari tents, typically offering a step up in comfort with proper beds and sometimes wood-burners, while still keeping you close to the woodland trails and the quiet, rural character that makes this part of Northamptonshire worth visiting.
