Eskdale is a valley in the western Lake District in Cumbria, surrounded by fells and running down to the Irish Sea coast. The valley has long been used for farming and slate quarrying, and the narrow-gauge Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway still runs through it, originally built to transport slate from the mines.
