Lingfield sits on the edge of the High Weald, a landscape of ancient woodland, hop gardens and steep little valleys known locally as ghylls, and while that makes for excellent walking and cycling country, it is worth remembering that wild camping remains illegal in England without the explicit permission of the landowner. Surrey and the neighbouring Weald are farmed and privately owned almost everywhere you look, so anyone hoping to pitch a tent for the night needs to book a proper campsite or glamping site rather than head off-grid, and asking permission first is always the safer, more considerate route if a landowner-agreed pitch is what you are after.
That said, the Weald's clay-and-sandstone terrain and its patchwork of small fields and streams make for a particularly attractive camping landscape once you are on a proper site: gently undulating rather than mountainous, well wooded, and dotted with the kind of hidden lakes and mill ponds that give this corner of Surrey its character. Facilities-based campsites and caravan parks in the wider Lingfield and Tandridge area make good use of this setting, often set among trees or beside water, and many combine tent pitches with glamping options such as shepherd's huts, safari tents or pods for those who want a countryside stay without the full camping kit.
Spring and early autumn tend to be the sweet spot for camping around Lingfield: the Weald's clay soils can turn heavy after wet weather, so a settled dry spell in May, June or September usually gives the most comfortable underfoot conditions, alongside long evenings for sitting out. Midsummer weekends coincide with the busiest racing fixtures at Lingfield Park, so it is worth booking a little further ahead if you want to combine a night under canvas with a day at the races. Glamping is a strong option here year-round, since a well-insulated pod or shepherd's hut takes the edge off the Weald's cooler nights in spring and autumn, while still putting you within easy reach of the village, its pubs and the racecourse itself.
