Ditchling sits right at the foot of the South Downs, and the open chalk grassland above the village, particularly around Ditchling Beacon, is a magnet for anyone who loves being outdoors, but it is worth being clear from the outset that wild camping is not legal in England without the landowner's permission, and that includes the South Downs National Park. Instead, the area around Ditchling has a growing number of proper campsites and glamping sites on farmland just outside the village and across the wider Downs, ranging from simple grass pitches for tents to fully equipped bell tents, shepherd's huts and yurts for those who want the outdoor experience without leaving creature comforts entirely behind. Many of these sites make a virtue of their setting, with pitches looking out over rolling farmland or within easy reach of the South Downs Way, so you can step straight from your tent onto one of the best long-distance trails in the country.

The terrain around Ditchling is proper downland: steep, exposed chalk grassland on the escarpment giving way to gentler, more sheltered farmland and woodland as you drop into the Weald, so it is worth choosing a site with your plans in mind, whether that is a high, breezy spot with big views or a more tucked-away pitch out of the wind. Late spring through early autumn is the most reliable camping season, when the ground is drier underfoot and the long evenings suit sitting out with a view of the Downs, though the exposed top of the escarpment can still catch a stiff breeze even in midsummer, so a sturdy tent and warm layers are sensible whatever the forecast promises. Glamping has become an increasingly popular way to experience this stretch of the South Downs, and a night in a bell tent or shepherd's hut near Ditchling, with the Beacon on your doorstep for a sunrise walk, is one of the most memorable ways to appreciate this small but remarkable corner of Sussex.
