Northiam sits within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a landscape of ridgetop villages, steep-sided ghylls, ancient woodland and small irregular fields that has changed little in character for centuries. It is attractive walking and touring country, but it is important to remember that wild camping is not legal in England without the landowner's explicit permission; pitching up on farmland, common land or roadside verges around Northiam without asking first can lead to being moved on, or worse. The good news is that the wider Weald and nearby Rother valley have a healthy scattering of certified sites, small farm campsites and glamping operations that welcome tents, campervans and motorhomes, many run by local farmers keen to share their patch of countryside properly.
The terrain here is gently undulating rather than dramatic, a patchwork of orchards, hop gardens, sheep pasture and oak woodland cut through by sunken lanes, which makes for easy, enjoyable walking and cycling rather than serious hill country. Pitches tend to be small and quiet, often with views across the Rother valley towards Bodiam or the Rye Levels, and many sites are within a short drive of Great Dixter, Bodiam Castle and the Kent & East Sussex Railway, making them a good base for exploring without needing to move on each night.
Late spring through to early autumn is the best window, when the Weald's woodlands and hedgerows are at their fullest and evenings are long enough to enjoy a fire pit or a walk from the tent. Summer school-holiday weekends and the railway's peak steam season are the busiest times, so booking ahead is sensible. For those who prefer a roof over their head but still want to be outdoors, glamping options in the area range from simple bell tents and shepherd's huts to more comfortable safari tents and pods, several with views over the same rolling Wealden farmland that has shaped this part of Sussex for generations.
