There are no formal campsites in Cauldon itself, and wild camping is not legally permitted anywhere in England without the landowner's explicit permission, including on the open moorland and farmland around the village — this is private, working agricultural and quarrying land, not access land in the Dartmoor sense. Anyone wanting to camp near Cauldon should look to the established sites dotted through the Manifold Valley and around Waterhouses, several of which cater specifically to walkers and cyclists using the Manifold Way, offering basic pitches alongside electric hook-ups for tourers and campervans.
The terrain here is classic White Peak limestone country: rolling, sheep-grazed uplands cut through by steep-sided dry valleys and gorges like the Manifold, Hamps and Dovedale, with thin, free-draining soils that can still turn heavy underfoot after rain. Conditions are generally at their best from late spring through to early autumn, when the ground has firmed up and the days are long enough for a full walk or cycle ride along the valley trails before setting up camp. Midsummer weekends and school holidays are the busiest period, so booking ahead is worthwhile if a particular site or view is wanted; spring and early autumn offer a quieter, cooler alternative with the beech woodland along the valleys at its most attractive.
For those who would rather skip the tent altogether, glamping has taken hold across the wider Staffordshire Moorlands and Peak District, with shepherd's huts, safari tents and converted farm buildings increasingly common on working farms near Waterhouses, Ilam and the Manifold Valley. These sites tend to combine the setting of a campsite with proper beds, heating and sometimes en-suite facilities, and are a popular compromise for families or anyone visiting outside the height of summer when a canvas tent alone might feel exposed on this open, breezy stretch of moorland.
