Bishop's Waltham makes a quiet, well-placed base for anyone wanting to camp on the western edge of the South Downs National Park. As in the rest of England, wild camping is not legal here without the landowner's permission, so plan on a proper campsite or a farm pitch rather than pitching up in a field or on open downland — even within the National Park, wild camping rights don't generally extend to Hampshire's stretch of the Downs. The reward for sticking to a licensed site is easy access to genuinely good walking country: chalk downland trails around Old Winchester Hill, the gentler river valley of the Meon, and the wet meadows of Bishop's Waltham Moors right on the town's doorstep, all without having to drive far from your tent.
The countryside around Bishop's Waltham is classic South Downs-fringe terrain — rolling chalk hills, patchwork fields, beech hangers and quiet lanes — rather than dramatic wilderness, which makes it well suited to family camping and to newer campers who want good walking without remote or technical terrain. Sites in the surrounding villages and along the Meon Valley range from simple, small touring and tent pitches on working farms to slightly larger campsites with better facilities, and a growing number now offer glamping options — safari tents, shepherd's huts and pods — for anyone who wants the setting without carrying their own kit.
The best camping season here runs from late spring to early autumn. May and June bring mild weather and long evenings, ideal for exploring the Moors and the Downs without the summer holiday crowds; July and August are busiest, particularly around school holidays, so it's worth booking ahead; and a settled spell in September can be one of the best times to camp, with the chalk grassland and woodland turning and far fewer people about. Hampshire's weather is changeable rather than harsh, but the chalk downland can still be exposed and cool after dark even in summer, so it pays to come prepared regardless of the month. Whatever the season, a site around Bishop's Waltham puts you within easy reach of both the South Downs and the Solent coast, making it a flexible base for a longer Hampshire camping trip.
