Camping in Tideswell

Camping around Tideswell means making the most of the White Peak's dramatic limestone scenery, but it comes with one important rule: wild camping is illegal in England without the express permission of the landowner, and that includes the Peak District National Park, however tempting an empty dale might look at dusk. The good news is that the area has a healthy scattering of proper campsites, many on working farms in the dales surrounding the village, offering pitches for tents, campervans and touring caravans within easy reach of Tideswell, Millers Dale and the Monsal Trail.

The terrain here is classic limestone upland: thin, free-draining soil over rock, cropped grazing pasture criss-crossed by dry-stone walls, and steep-sided dales that can turn cold and blustery even in summer, so a sturdy tent and warm sleeping bag are worth packing whatever the season. Ground can also turn boggy after heavy rain despite the free-draining rock beneath, so pitches in the sheltered valley bottoms are often more comfortable than exposed hilltop fields. The best camping season runs from late spring through to early autumn, when longer days and milder nights make the most of walks along the Monsal Trail and through Tideswell Dale, though shoulder-season camping in April or October can bring the dales almost entirely to yourself.

For those who would rather skip the guy ropes altogether, glamping has taken hold across this part of Derbyshire, with safari tents, shepherd's huts and pods offering proper beds, wood-burners and sometimes a hot tub, while keeping the same dark skies and dawn birdsong that draws people to camp here in the first place. Many sites are family-run and happy to point guests towards nearby walks, the village's well dressings if the timing lines up, or a table at one of Tideswell's pubs for an evening meal.
