Camping in Bridgwater

Somerset's gently rolling countryside around Bridgwater, from the wooded slopes of the Quantock Hills to the flat, watery expanse of the Somerset Levels, makes for rewarding camping country, and there is a good spread of sites within a short drive of the town. As in the rest of England, wild camping around Bridgwater is not legally permitted without the landowner's prior permission, unlike the more relaxed access rights in Scotland, so it is worth booking an established campsite or approaching a farm or landowner directly if you want to camp off-grid on the Levels or in the Quantocks. Spring through early autumn is the best window for camping here: the Levels can be genuinely wet underfoot outside the drier months, given their low-lying, well-drained-only-by-design nature, while summer evenings on the Quantocks offer some of the best sunset views in the county. Bridgwater Carnival in November draws large crowds into the town itself, so if you are camping nearby for the event, book well ahead as local sites fill quickly.

Glamping has taken off in the area in recent years, with shepherd's huts, wooden pods and safari-style tents offering a comfortable alternative to traditional tent camping, often with the added appeal of Quantock hillside or vineyard settings.
