Camping in Westwell

Westwell sits right beneath the chalk ridge of the Kent Downs, with the North Downs Way and the old Pilgrims' Way running along the escarpment above the village, so it is a genuinely good base for anyone wanting to combine camping with serious downland walking. There is no campsite in the village itself, and it is worth being clear that wild camping is not legal in England without the landowner's explicit permission, whatever the terrain looks like on a map — this applies as much to the open chalk downland here as anywhere else. Anyone wanting to camp rough on the Kent Downs needs to ask first, and in practice that usually means using one of the licensed sites in the wider Ashford and Wye area instead.

The terrain around Westwell is classic North Downs chalk country: steep, sometimes exposed ridgelines, beech hangers and ancient woodland such as King's Wood, with valley villages tucked into the folds below.
