Camping in Monyash

Monyash sits at the head of Lathkill Dale on the high limestone plateau of the White Peak, and while there is no campsite within the village itself, a handful of well-regarded sites lie within a few miles, making the area popular with tents, touring caravans and campervans alike. As with anywhere in England, wild camping without the landowner's permission is not legal here, however tempting the open plateau scenery might look; the Peak District's access land rules do not extend a general right to pitch a tent, so it is worth sticking to established sites. Nearby options include family-friendly touring parks around Newhaven and Chelmorton, both within a few miles of Monyash and well placed for walks out along the Limestone Way or down into Lathkill Dale, as well as a larger site closer to Bakewell with hardstanding and grass pitches and a bar on site. For something more sheltered, several small farm-based sites in the surrounding villages offer basic, quiet pitches away from the busier tourist routes. Glamping has also taken hold in the area, with insulated pods, shepherd's huts and a scattering of more unusual stays such as converted gypsy caravans available on farms within a short drive of the village, generally with campfires and countryside views thrown in. The terrain here is distinctive: thin soil over limestone, riddled with dry valleys and disused lead workings, so ground can be uneven and drainage unpredictable after rain even though the underlying rock keeps standing water rare. Late spring to early autumn is the easiest camping season, when the dales are green and the plateau is at its most forgiving; this is exposed, high-altitude country, and campers should be ready for sharp overnight temperature drops and fast-changing weather even in midsummer. Booking ahead is sensible for the well dressing weekend in late May or early June and for peak summer school holidays, when the small number of local sites fill quickly.
